How to Change Your Address with the Social Security Administration (SSA)

You will be required to complete a Social Security change of address when you move to a new home if you receive benefits from the Social Security Administration in any form. Otherwise, your benefits will be mailed to your old address and you may not be able to access them immediately. Fortunately, recipients of SSA benefits will not have to fill out a complicated Social Security change of address form in order to complete this process. Instead, the SSA provides beneficiaries with a few options to easily update their addresses.

The SSA aims to provide the public with more accessible methods of handling business with the agency, so they have created an online application where users can complete an SSA change of address. This application is called My Social Security and it allows users to handle a variety of operations with the SSA online. However, users without access to the internet can also visit a Social Security office to update their address.

Note: Beneficiaries of Medicare will also be required to change their address with the Social Security Administration if they ever move.

Why should I complete a Social Security change of address?

Recipients of Social Security benefits or Medicare should prioritize completing an SSA change of address after moving to a new home. Beneficiaries who receive their benefits through a mailed paper check are recommended to complete the address change as soon as possible. However, even those who receive their benefits through direct deposit are required to complete a Social Security change of address.

In fact, the Social Security Administration has emphasized that even those who receive their benefits by direct deposit must update their address if they move. The SSA is required to have a correct and updated address so that they can send letters and other important information to program participants. In some cases, the SSA may revoke benefits if they are unable to contact a beneficiary.

How to Change Your Address with the SSA

If you receive benefits from Social Security, you will be required to inform the Social Security Administration of your change of address. In order to make this process simple, the Social Security Administration has provided a safe and convenient way for applicants to complete this process online. Performing an address change online is also the quickest way to update your contact information with the SSA. To complete a Social Security change of address online, follow these easy steps:

  1. Log in to your My Social Security account on the SSA’s website.
  2. Click the link “My Profile” at the right side of the screen.
  3. Select the “Update Contact Information” button and include your new address.
  4. Choose that date when you would want your information to be scheduled for update and select “Next.”
  5. Review the address you provided and verify that your contact information has been entered correctly. When you are finished, click “Submit.”

Currently, this service is not available to recipients of Supplemental Security Income (SSI) or those without a mailing address in the states. Additionally, individuals who cannot complete the Social Security Administration change of address online will need to update the agency using other methods.

How to Change Your Address with Medicare

If you are a recipient of Medicare, you will also need to update your contact information with the Social Security Administration when you change addresses. You may be asking, “Can you change your address with Social Security online?” Without changing your address, you could be missing important mail for the Medicare agency containing information about benefits, coverage and more. In order to avoid missing any important documents, be sure to update your address with the SSA as soon as you can.

A Social Security change of address is required for Medicare participants who move into a new home, even if they do not receive Social Security benefits. Participants that move to a new state may need to contact a Medicare office near where they are moving for more information. Fortunately, beneficiaries can choose from all of the different approaches to performing an SSA change of address for Medicare. This means that participants in the Medicare program can simply use their My Social Security account to update their address online. Medicare beneficiaries must follow these steps in order to change their address online:

  1. Create a My Social Security account on the SSA’s website and login.
  2. Select the “My Profile” link at the right side of the screen.
  3. Click on the link “Update Contact Information” and input your new address.
  4. Select the effective date for the address update and then select “Next.”
  5. Check to ensure that you provided the correct address and click “Submit” when you are finished.

If you are unable to access the internet for any reason, you also have the option to complete an SSA change of address for Medicare in person or over the phone. In order to report a change of address for the Medicare program, you can call the Social Security Administration at 1-800-772-1213. Alternatively, you have the option to visit a local Social Security field office near your new home. An SSA representative will be able to assist you throughout the entire change of address process.
